Schema Compare & Version Control
Glossary & Technical Reference
Key terms and acronyms used across schema comparison, database version control, and schema deployment workflows.
B
Baseline
A known database schema state used as a reference for future comparisons.
C
Change Set
A defined collection of database schema changes intended to be reviewed or deployed together.
Column
A named field within a database table with a defined data type and related properties.
Constraint
A database rule that restricts or validates data, such as a primary key, foreign key, unique constraint, or check constraint.
Change Tracking
The practice of recording what database structure changed, when it changed, and the relevant version or release.
D
Database CI/CD
A development and delivery practice that automates validation, testing, and deployment of database changes.
Database Object
A structural component of a database, including tables, views, indexes, procedures, functions, triggers, and constraints.
Deployment Script
SQL or another executable definition used to apply approved schema changes to a target database.
Dependency
A relationship in which one database object or application component relies on another object.
Destructive Change
A schema change that can remove or invalidate existing structures or data, such as dropping a column or table.
Drift Detection
The process of identifying differences between an expected schema and an actual database schema.
E
Environment
A database instance or stage such as development, QA, staging, or production.
I
Index
A database structure that supports efficient data retrieval and can itself require controlled versioning when changed.
M
Migration
The process of applying database structural changes from one schema version to another.
R
Rollback
A procedure for reversing an applied database change or restoring a previous supported schema state.
S
Schema
The structural definition of database objects, including tables, columns, data types, constraints, indexes, views, and programmable objects.
Schema Compare
The process of comparing two database schemas to identify structural differences.
Schema Diff
The set of detected differences between a source schema and target schema.
Schema Drift
Unplanned divergence between database schemas across environments or systems.
Schema Migration
A controlled change that moves a database from one structural version to another.
Schema Version
A defined state of a database schema represented by an identifiable revision or release.
Source Schema
The database schema treated as the reference when performing a comparison.
Schema Repository
A controlled location where schema definitions, migration scripts, or database release artifacts are stored.
T
Target Schema
The database schema being compared against or updated from the source schema.
V
Version Control
A mechanism for recording and managing successive versions of database changes.
